Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening Sugar Land TX

Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a routine surgical procedure done at Smiles on Greatwood Dentistry, which helps to contour the crestal bone to allow exposure of decay to be restored below the gum line.

There are several reasons for crown lengthening to be done. One of them being is to expose more tooth surface and to gain enough clinical tooth structure to hold new restorations. Another valid reason for this procedure is to get access to cavity below the gum line.

When there is not enough tooth structure to affix a crown, this is the only option. This procedure may be used in other dental conditions that may need restorations. Common are: a tooth that has decay beneath the gum line, a tooth that is fractured under the gum line, or a short tooth. A crown lengthening can reduce the bone level and gum tissue in order to gain better access to your tooth.

When a tooth breaks, or if there is acute decay, the remaining healthy tooth area is reduced and this can affect the potential for a successful tooth restoration.  With crown lengthening, more of the tooth’s surface will be exposed and this will help act as an anchor for future restorative work such as crowns, veneers, or more.

Crown lengthening is usually accomplished within an hour. Specific surgical instruments will be used to shape both the gum tissue and the underlying bone around the tooth for which your crown has been planned. Only the tissue that is in the localized area surrounding the tooth will be treated, and there is no risk to the adjacent teeth.

For most patients, crown lengthening does not result in great discomfort. The recovery takes a few weeks (most dentists recommend at least 4-6 weeks) but the patient can return to work immediately and begin to eat soft diet the day after the procedure.
