What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that replace the missing teeth and surrounding tissues.

Someone who has missing teeth due to an accident, extensive gum disease or damaged teeth that couldn’t be saved may need dentures.

The material used to fabricate dentures is hard resin. Resin is not as durable and it may chip and wear out quicker than your natural teeth. It is recommended to replace your dentures every five years.

There are two types of dentures – full (complete) dentures and partial dentures.

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures are dentures that replace all of your natural teeth in either the upper or lower arch.

Dentures are customized to the patient’s mouth, and appearance can be very esthetic and natural-looking. When a complete denture is the only alternative it may be a significant improvement over decayed, missing and diseased teeth and gums.

Complete dentures may be inserted onto implants in the jaw which can increase stability, preservation, and ability to function, also known as overdenture. The denture is removable but secured by a retentive abutment on the implant which seats into the denture.

A period of adjusting to new dentures must be foreseen. This includes learning to wear, eat and speak with your new denture.

There are two types of complete dentures: immediate and conventional dentures.

Immediate dentures can be inserted on the same day, immediately after the removal of natural teeth. An immediate denture will relieve the anxiety of a person to never appear in public without teeth. When an immediate denture is inserted at the time of extraction, it will act as a seal to protect the tissues and reduce bleeding. An immediate denture will allow you to establish your speech patterns early and allow you to chew more comfortably than without any teeth.

Conventional dentures are dentures made after the teeth have been removed and the gums are healed. The dentist may ask the patient to wait a few weeks before taking impressions. Once the gums have healed, the dentist will take several impressions of your arch and measures the space in your mouth. A custom tray made of acrylic is used to fabricate a more accurate impression of your arch. Once the impression visit is complete, the dentures may take another few weeks before they are ready. Once you receive your permanent dentures, your dentist will recommend home care instructions. It’s important to ensure a good fit right away because poorly fitting dentures can be irritating to the gums. Once you have adjusted to the dentures, you can remove them at night to allow normal stimulation of the gum tissues by the tongue and saliva, which helps keep your gum tissue healthy.

Complete dentures are recommended when:

  • All set of teeth have been removed
  • The remaining teeth can’t be saved
  • The remaining teeth cannot support a partial denture and no other alternatives are available
